Although historically linked to Lacuna Coil—having branched out from them in the late '90s through guitarists Claudio Leo and Raffaele Zagaria—Cayne have faced a much more turbulent career. This reached a tragic peak in 2013 with the premature passing of Claudio due to an incurable illness, just weeks before the release of their self-titled album.

With the original line-up completed by Mario Piazza (vocals), Daniele Rossetti (bass), and Filippo "Oinos" Ferrari (drums), their debut album Old Faded Pictures was released in 2001 under Scarlet Records. It was preceded by a promotional single featuring the title track and a cover of Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy."

Following a long hiatus, the Milanese band reformed in 2007 around Claudio Leo and a new core of musicians from Milan and Pavia: Marco Barusso (guitarist and producer), Antonello Pudva (bassist, replaced by Andrea Bacchio in 2009), Guido Carli (drums), Giordano Adornato (vocals), and keyboardist/violinist Giovanni Lanfranchi.

With this new line-up, Cayne evolved from their original Gothic Metal/Rock roots to explore new territories, blending a powerful, dynamic modern metal with the decadent melodies provided by Giovanni’s electric violin. This element became a permanent fixture, enriching and defining the sound of a band that is truly unique on the global scene.

The first release from this line-up was the 2011 EP Addicted, featuring three brand-new tracks and a deeply heartfelt, gripping live version of "Old Faded Pictures." This was followed by a successful tour supporting their longtime friends Lacuna Coil on the Italian leg of their "Darkness Rising Tour"—a relationship of mutual respect and friendship that continues to this day, rooted in their unique bond with Claudio.

The Self-Titled Album and International Tours

In February 2013, the album Cayne was finally released. Claudio Leo's dream came true, though sadly the record came out shortly after his passing from an incurable illness. Honoring Claudio's wishes and artistic legacy, the band pushed forward and released the self-titled album via the Dutch label Graviton Music Services (founded by former Roadrunner Records executives).

The album features prestigious guest appearances, including:

Paul Quinn (Saxon) on the track "Black Liberation" (who became a fan after Cayne supported Saxon at the Live Club on March 15, 2010).

Jeff Waters (Annihilator) on the track "King of Nothing."

Andrea Ferro (Lacuna Coil) delivering a duet on "Through the Ashes."

In March 2013, Cayne embarked on a European tour (with Gabriele Pisu on guitar) supporting American band VIZA, their labelmates on Graviton. They played 13 shows in 17 days across Switzerland, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany, France—where they concluded the tour with a triumphant show in Paris (available on YouTube as Cayne - Live in Paris 2013)—and the UK, where they performed at the fifth edition of HammerFest alongside Killing Joke, Hatebreed, Candlemass, and Sodom.

The tour was met with an excellent response, sparking the spontaneous creation of fan-led Facebook pages that still support the band today, wishing to see them live in their cities again.

Four official music videos were released to promote the record: "Addicted," "My Damnation," "Together as One," and finally "Little Witch." The latter was released in July 2014 as an EP, featuring two versions of the title track, an acoustic version of "Together as One," and the unreleased track "Adore"—a poignant ballad that was later accompanied by a very unique animated music video designed like a pop-up book.

Meanwhile, the band found a solid new guitarist in Diego Minach (formerly of the underrated band Rhope), continuing an intense live schedule around the Milan area and at various metal festivals.

Evolution and "Beyond the Scars"

The line-up shifted once again in January 2015 when producer/guitarist Marco Barusso and drummer Guido Carli left the band. However, with the arrival of drummer Giovanni Tani (Alteria, Rhope, Siveral), Cayne regained stability. They decided to move forward with a single guitar, starting work on their next record with Diego Minach taking center stage as both guitarist and producer.

In June 2018, Cayne released Beyond the Scars through Graviton. Mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Studios in Sweden, the album's title reflects its cathartic nature—honoring the past while looking firmly to the future, marking a major turning point and a grand rebirth. The stunning, decadent artwork was created by American artist Travis Smith, renowned for his iconic covers for Opeth, Overkill, Katatonia, Death, and many others.

Beyond the Scars is more than just a new album for Cayne. It represents a rebirth, an awakening, and a brand-new chapter for the Italian band after a long four-year silence. During this time, the band evolved and grew; as their wounds healed, the scars remained—and from beyond those scars, a dangerous new version of Cayne was born.

While their early career relied heavily on Gothic Rock/Metal, those roots remain present on this third album, particularly in the arrangements and vocal lines. Right from the first listen, audiences can appreciate an unpredictable mix of melancholy tracks and "rock ’n love" reminiscences, as if the band were making up for lost time.

Beyond the Scars acts as a kaleidoscopic blender, mixing the musical influences of the last twenty years—HIM, Type O Negative, Katatonia, Lacuna Coil, The 69 Eyes, Paradise Lost, and Depeche Mode—into just under an hour of music, to the delight of anyone who grew up with these sounds. It also features the song "One More Chance," a composition by the late, unforgettable Claudio Leo, which seamlessly blends with the rest of the tracks.

Three videos were released for this album: "Torn Apart," "Celebration of the Wicked," and an animated video for "Blessed by the Night." The latter is a hymn to the night inspired by the movie The Lost Boys, featuring a young Kiefer Sutherland leading a gang of damned, lost vampires. The video, created by Davide Cilloni of Eclipse Media, is a pure tribute to the '80s: Cayne embark on a night ride aboard Back to the Future's DeLorean toward the "HurriCayne" club, crossing paths with iconic pop culture figures of the era—from Ken the Survivor (Fist of the North Star) to Alien—all idols "blessed by the night."

2026 – EXUVIA

In February 2026, Cayne released their new EP Exuvia, showcasing the band’s most intimate and vulnerable side. The EP features unplugged versions of:

It also includes a reinterpretation of the classic “The Power of Love” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, presented in two versions — including a deeply emotional stripped rendition.

Exuvia represents a sonic shedding — a deliberate removal of heavy layers to focus on atmosphere, emotion and performance while preserving the band’s intense and cinematic identity. The release is accompanied by an official lyric video for “The Power of Love” and a studio-footage collage video capturing authentic recording moments for the “stripped” version.

With more than twenty-five years of history, Cayne continue to evolve while staying true to their core essence: powerful, emotional and unmistakably unique.

"Outcast", “Domina” and “Saviour”

“Outcast” marks the long-awaited return. Published on April 9, 2026, it features guest drums by Hugo Ribeiro of Moonspell, adding an explosive and powerful backbone to the song.

Blending massive guitars, dark atmospheres, and the band’s trademark electric violin, “Outcast” builds a unique sonic identity that stands out in the modern alternative metal landscape. At the center of the track is a powerful, chant-along chorus that transforms alienation into strength. “Outcast” is an anthem for everyone who feels proud of being different in a world that demands conformity — a cry of rebellion, hope, and unity among outsiders, meant to be sung at the top of your lungs. It is the first song from the long-awaited new album to be released at the beginning of 2027.

On July 3, 2026, the band released the new single "Domina," featuring guest vocals by singer Ambre Vourvahis of the German band Xandria. Bringing together catchy gothic and symphonic metal atmospheres, the track is already enjoying great success. "Domina" tells the story of Mia Corvere, the fierce protagonist of the dark fantasy book trilogy Nevernight by global bestselling author Jay Kristoff.

September 2026 a new chapter arrived, new single “Saviour”, a musical journey through modern sounds, mixing the musical roots of the band (Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Lacuna Coil) with new acts like Bad Omens, Architects, Soen.
